About Christine
After fifteen years of tutoring / teaching / mentoring math, my students repeatedly confirm this belief by demonstrating skills and confidence they didn’t have when we started.
Professional Background
I have taught in public and private schools, but decided to teach mathematics in a private, one-on-one setting that allows me to focus on the special situation of each student, and to design lessons specific to the needs and interests of each.
Like generations of students, the math teaching I experienced in school was the typical approach of memorizing basic math facts, repeating them many times over, preparing for tests, and forgetting most of it soon afterward. Like many whose school experience with math was tiresome, I avoided math, believing I wasn’t good at it.
This changed when I went through the teaching training program at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where I encountered an approach to teaching and learning math that not only helped me see I was actually quite good at math, but gave me the tools to reach many types of learners. Since then I have continued to research and refine my teaching skills. I am still learning new ways to reach students with strategies and activities that make learning effective and satisfying.
Most importantly however, I have been learning from my students, focusing on their needs and interests, listening to their feedback, and observing how they learn best.
Personal Background
I grew up in a small town in the foothills of the Alps in Germany. I lived in Munich for over ten years, finished a Masters degree in History there, but then got married and moved with my husband to the US in 1985.
While math has played a major role in my life for many years, my interests are quite varied: from reading and writing, to Wing Chun Kung Fu, to belly dancing, backpacking, and much more. Learning, seeking, and discovery, is my way of life.
